What are the different views of a system and how do they relate to each other? How do you validate that your model actually represents reality well enough to be useful? These are methodology questions, not software questions.
Only after establishing that foundation does tool training make complete sense. Now when someone learns where the buttons are and how to use specific software features, they understand what they’re trying to accomplish. They can evaluate whether the tool’s way of doing things aligns with good practice or whether they need to adapt their workflow.
The Long-Term Difference
Teams that understand methodology adapt better when tools change. And tools do change constantly. Software vendors get acquired, better products emerge, customer requirements force adoption of different platforms. Engineers who learned “how to use Tool X” need retraining every time the tool changes. Engineers who learned systems engineering methodology just need to figure out how the new tool implements the concepts they already understand.
There’s also a collaboration benefit that’s easy to miss. When everyone on a team shares a common methodological foundation, they can look at a model and quickly understand what someone else was thinking. They recognize the patterns, they know what level of abstraction they’re looking at, and they can spot problems or suggest improvements. When people only share knowledge of the same software, they can all open the same file but might interpret what they’re seeing completely differently.
Making the Shift
For organizations stuck in the tool-proficiency trap, getting out requires acknowledging the gap first. That means honest assessment of whether teams really understand systems engineering principles or just know how to operate software. It usually becomes obvious during project retrospectives when the same types of problems keep appearing despite “doing MBSE.”
The fix isn’t abandoning tools or dismissing the value of software proficiency. It’s putting methodology first and treating tools as the implementation layer rather than the foundation. That might mean investing in different types of training, bringing in people with deep methodological expertise to mentor teams, or being more deliberate about how systems engineering practices get defined and enforced.
The goal is engineers who can explain why they’re modeling something a particular way, not just that the software allows them to do it. When someone asks “why did you decompose the system this way?” the answer should be based on engineering reasoning, not “because that’s where this goes in the tool.” That shift in thinking is what separates teams that use tools from teams that practice actual systems engineering.
